About MS Answers
Learning for Life is a series of client-focused educational initiatives where the key objective is to provide timely, credible and unbiased information to the MS community. The Learning for Life series features an online forum, online educational sessions and e-bulletin series that provide people with MS and their families’ information and tools to enhance their quality of life.
In the spring of 2006, the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada launched the Ask the Expert web site, located at www.msanswers.ca. This online forum has allowed people with MS, caregivers and others affected by MS to discuss issues of importance and obtain accurate answers to MS specific questions from subject experts including neurologists, nurses, psychiatrists and other health care professionals totaling over 40 active experts.
Since its launch, the website has received an average 3 questions a day, clearly indicating a need and interest for information that is accurate, up-to-date and targeted to the everyday reader. This website allows people to submit questions electronically in French or English at their convenience. Questions are submitted anonymously and answers are provided by the most appropriate expert based on subject matter. New questions and answer are posted to the Ask the Expert up to website five times a week and are then stored within the website’s library.
Update on the Access Expo: Celebrating Abilities of June 17, 2010
The morning breakfast meeting with business representatives hosted by the Durham Region Department of Economic and Development brought audience up to speed on the Customer Service Accessibility Standards regulations recently enacted by provincial government legislature.
The vendor display featured over 80 vendors promoting various services and equipment of interest to Persons with Disabilities. The turn out was very good.
The Speech by David Onley, the Lieutenant Governor Ontario was well received as he congratulated the 9 AACs of Durham for hosting such an excellent event. Afterwards he toured the vendor area and spoke with each of them and with many of the visitors there at the time. He acknowledged the leadership that all of Durham Region has shown on accessibility and the example it set for the rest of the province.
The bulk of the feedback from vendors was very positive with participants indicating that this was a wonderful opportunity for vendors to network and provide a valuable and necessary service for this area.
The public was appreciative of the wealth of information on services available. Also the entertainment and speakers as outlined in the agenda were very well received.
A very special thanks must go to Tracey Tyner Cavanagh Accessibility Coordinator for Durham Region Accessible Advisory Committee who did an exceptional amount of work in planning, coordinating and tying up loose ends to make this expo work as well as it did.
Thanks also to Paul Feldman Chair AAC Ajax for his hunting down vendors and to Linda Lawson Accessibility Coordinator City of Oshawa for organizing the volunteers. There are many more to thank including Durham College for there assistance behind the scenes in making the facility work for this very special event.
Letters have gone out to all the mayors thanking them for their gracious financial and logistical support for this event.
There was discussion about doing it again next year but with elections coming in October 2010 and the new combined Accessibility Standards for Communication and Information, Employment and for Transportation that Accessibility Coordinators will be responsible for implementing in their respective regions, towns, cities and municipalities it was too much of a workload. Perhaps in June 2012.

Study Suggests that Smoking and Exposure to Epstein-Barr Virus May Interact as Risk Factors for Developing MS
In a new study, researchers show that two individual factors that were previously identified as increasing the likelihood of developing MS – exposure to Epstein-Barr virus and tobacco smoking – may interact and multiply to substantially increase the risk of developing MS in those with both risk factors.
